29 Nov Tallahassee Weddings & Traditions
As a luxury mototrcoach provider, we get to see lots of wedding parties gathering for a day or two of celebrations. We love Tallahassee weddings and the many traditions that come with them.
As a society, we love traditions too. That is especially true when it comes to weddings. We kind of assume there will be invitations and wedding cake, a photographer that’s there to capture the day, a rehearsal dinner, a best man and bridesmaids, a reception and honeymoon, not to mention a list of other things we do to celebrate and show support.
But just as with other occasions in our lives, the things we do for weddings have been handed down over generations. While the original intent behind some of these actions may have superstitious underpinnings, we still carry the traditions forward because they have been done for such a long time.
Take the wedding cake, for example. Today the bride and groom will customize each aspect of it, requesting the flavors and shapes they want, as well as the specific flowers to be used for decoration. Sure, they want it to taste good for when they serve a portion of it to the guests, but it’s more than that: the wedding cake is a display, something that all of the guests will see and admire. But historically? The wedding cake was actually used to throw at the bride! Pretty sure today’s bride wouldn’t be thrilled if one of the guests grabbed a hunk of cake and made her the target, but it wouldn’t have been weird hundreds of years ago.
There’s also a big to-do about where the actual ceremony is held. Traditionally, weddings are held in a church, and other times they are held at a special location that is significant to both parties. We arrange for a religious or civic leader to perform the ceremony; we plan the music that will play when the bride walks down the aisle. We have flower girls and bridesmaids and all that jazz. However, centuries ago, it was a much simpler affair. Ceremonies weren’t always held in a church, and it didn’t even have to be as formal as a ceremony. Sometimes it was as simple as two people exchanging promises with each other and taking each other as husband and wife.
What about the tradition of getting a diamond as a token of love and the promise of forthcoming marriage? What’s the story behind that? In old times, young men would often give the bride’s family jewels and precious stones in exchange for marrying their daughter. While we don’t continue that tradition today, the husband-to-be will often give his sweetheart a ring containing a gem that carries on that tradition in a modest way.
And while we’re talking about the ring, have you ever wondered why the wedding ring is always worn on the fourth finger of the left hand? How did that tradition begin? Well, as one answer to that question, the ancient Romans thought that the vein that ran in that finger ran straight to the heart. Placing the ring there symbolized love and devotion for their significant other.
Flowers are often a huge part of the day of celebration, too: the bride has a bouquet, the wedding party has corsages and boutonnieres, and tables and halls are decorated with sprays of flowers. Blooms were also used in olden times, but there were superstitious practices associated with them. Brides often carried herbs, for example, believing that they could drive harmful spirits away.
It’s kind of interesting to learn about the origins of some of the things that we do today, though we’re grateful some of those traditions have been altered a bit (no wedding cake in the bride’s face, for example). Weddings are an opportunity to congratulate two people who have found happiness together, a chance to wish them joy as they go forward in their lives.
